Memorial day Downieville
May 28, 2013
Whirlwind trip up to Downieville for Memorial Day Weekend. Crammed 3 dudes, a dog, bikes, and gear into Bean's truck and headed north.
Temps were crisp but the sun was shining and the Downieville magic was out in full force.
We hit up Lakes Basin first. Sean had his dog Asher running along, so he had to turn back early and do a smaller loop. Bean and I continued on, losing the trail amongst the snowdrifts, and finally sliding/hiking/bushwhacking our way to the top of Mt. Elwell for a hard earned beer.

Dude where's the damn trail?
The descent off Mt. Elwell, although snow-covered near the top, was a super fun, techy trail winding down amongst alpine lakes and streams.
After riding all day, despite tired legs and a comatose dog, we rallied for a sunset hike to the top of the Sierra Buttes, a striking rock formation that dominates the area's skyline. Incredible views were everywhere as the sun set.

Ended the trip with a quick blast down the Downieville downhill course the next morning, stuffed our faces with chili dogs and milkshakes in Downieville, and headed back to the Bay Area. A most excellent weekend indeed.
